We first saw previews of Jared Leto’s version of the Joker for the new DC comics film Suicide Squad last April and all I have to say is wow! Judging from the photos released this version of the Joker looks really menacing! Though to many fans Leto’s Joker looks promising, some fans are up in arms over the Joker’s “punk” appearance and all his tattoos. The question is, will this version of the Joker hold up to the previous versions of the character played by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger? I think it will, though I do think that it’ll be tough shoes to fill given how impressive Ledger’s version of the Joker was in the 2008 film The Dark Knight.
Jared Leto has had success as an actor with roles like the heroin-addicted Harry Goldfarb from Requiem For a Dream and John Lennon’s killer, Mark David Chapman, in Chapter 27. Leto is probably best known, though, as the lead singer of the rock band 30 Seconds to Mars.
Though Leto does not have quite the acting background as, say, Heath Ledger did, Leto’s performances as a serious actor do make his casting as the Joker look promising. Leto showed dedication to his role as Mark David Chapman by putting on weight to look like him and studying his movements, similar to how Ledger prepared for his role as the Joker by locking himself in a hotel room and coming up with how the character would act.
What Do You Think?
