Middle Grade Fantasy Adventures

The Betwixters Series

The Betwixers Series is a middle-grade fantasy adventure that takes readers on a magical journey between realms, where young heroes discover their unique abilities and face extraordinary challenges. Compared to the carefree fun of The Goonies and the charm of Harry Potter, this series is perfect for readers ages 8-12 who love stories of friendship, bravery, and the enchanting unknown. It’s filled with mystery, adventure, and the power of believing in yourself.

The Books in the Betwixters Series

Once Upon a Time

Book One

Magic was a myth to Noah—until a fairy’s dying plea drew him into The Dark Wood, where a beast of fangs and shadows stalks him and hungers for his very soul. Noah must decide: attempt a daring rescue and possibly fall prey to the forest’s ancient evils or turn his back and watch the fairy—and her magic—fade forever.

Noah and his friends face a big problem: they’re Betwixters, which means they can see Neevya, a fairy with a deadly secret. They want to help her, but they don’t know how, and time is running out. Things get even scarier when Grucker, the school bully, starts seeing Neevya too!

Being Betwixters is tough, especially with a shadow wolf from The Dark Wood on your heels. They barely escaped last time, and now the wolf’s howls haunt their nightmares. They must choose: do they brave the woods again to find the cure for Neevya, or do they stay safe at home while she fades away?

It’s up to Noah and his friends to face their fears and the shadow wolf one more time. If they get it wrong, they could lose Neevya and be trapped in The Dark Wood forever.

Fans of Harry Potter, The Goonies, and Percy Jackson will adore ‘Betwixters: Once Upon a Time,’ a captivating blend of magic, adventure, and friendship. Cantu’s imaginative tale promises an enchanting journey reminiscent of Harry Potter’s charm, The Goonies’ adventurous spirit, and Percy Jackson’s thrilling quests- an unforgettable adventure for readers of all ages.

What Others are Saying

Betwixters is a poetic and magical journey that leaves you mesmerized in the imagery.
Vanity Fair, France

This tale is about your classic school bullying with a twist, a twist of macabre horrors along the way. I especially loved the prologue, it really got me hooked. The author, Laura C. Cantu made the two worlds collide, faerie world and real world. Talk about weird and scary stuff, it’s all packed inside this book of which I have to say was a brilliant idea because it lends more character to the book. Imagine eating berries that makes you high; these and more are what Noah, Skye and Ethan met up with in trying to evade the school bully. Sorry can’t give any spoilers you just got to read it for yourselves. Nicely done.

This story is a great read for middle schoolers and even upper primary school advanced readers.  The book has three twelve-year-old protagonists that are best friends, one girl and two boys. They are challenged by bullying, how far you will go for friendship, and facing their fears of letting their parents down. There is fantasy and intrigue tied up in the story, with a generous dose of mystery!

This is the first book in the series and I am anxious to read the next installment.  The author does an excellent job of writing to the reading level in that it is easy for middle schoolers but not overly simple for adults.  I highly recommend this book for both girls or boys, especially those who face or have faced adversity in school.

Betwixters: Once Upon a Time is a brilliant middle-grade novel that is perfect for children from ages eight upwards, and I think it would be a brilliant book to have in school libraries, as it would draw children into the world full of magic and friendship, but also convey brilliant family dynamics that are full of support and love.
